Abstract

A few days ago, Medscape published a summary of progress in the treatment of infertility, recalling that 62 years ago was born the first baby conceived using frozen sperm (1). Since then, it has developed an increasing variety of options to increase the chances of conception, from the in vitro fertilization (IVF) to the freezing of ovarian tissue and uterus transplant. The first baby by in vitro fertilization (IVF), Louise Joy Brown, was born in 1978, and since then millions of parents have had offspring by this procedure. Another technique, developed in the early 1990s, is intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), originally used for male infertility problems. Fertilization has been obtained up to 50% to 80% of the time, but compared with conventional IVF, its use does not seem to have associated with better reproductive outcomes, according to the Medscape article.
