Maternal mortality in Peru is 303 per 100 000 live births, one of the highest in Latin America. The main causes are hemorrhage, 23%; abortion, 22%; infections, 18%, and toxemia, 17%. The factors influencing these deaths are pregnancy extreme ages, under 16 and over 35 years; multiparity; interpartal periods under two years; low socioeconomic status and low education of mothers. Infant mortality has high levels and, within it, the neonatal mortality looms, 25 per thousand live births. The hospital perinatal mortality rate is 19 per thousand live births, corresponding to 50% of early neonatal mortality, the most common cause is birth asphyxia. 70% of neonatal deaths are associated with low birth weight. Currently origin perinatal deaths are the leading cause of infant mortality. Even they reported about 180 cases of neonatal tetanus deaths, reflecting the low coverage of tetanus vaccination during pregnancy.Downloads
