Abstract

The author affirms that since 1932 the Obstetrical Clinic of the Medical School of the University of Sao Paulo is preoccupied with the conservative treatment of infra-partum rupture of the uterus. Therefore, since that time the hysterectomy has been substituted by uterine suture with tubal laceration when the extension and characteristics of the myometrial lesion suggests the risk rupture in future pregnancies and deliveries. The author refers 172 cases of uterine rupture observed during 1919-62. The hysterectomy incidence fell from 37,2 % (during the period 1919-44) to 11,5 % (in 1952-58) and the average of the hysterectomy incidence was 21,5 % for the total period of 1919-62.
